Welcome to the "hospital of the Mediterranean."
As a medical volunteer in Malta, you will learn about the Maltese health care system while assisting in various medical areas, based on your knowledge, training, experience and availability. Be a part of the facilitation and running of daily programs for patients. Placements are individualized for participants in all aspects of health care as well as pharmacy placements.
Located in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily, Malta basically consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Their total population is about 366,000. The distance between Malta and the nearest point in Sicily is 58 miles. The distance from the nearest point on the North African mainland (Tunisia) is 180 miles. Gibraltar is 1,134 miles to the west and Alexandria is 938 miles to the east.
Many volunteers organize tours around Malta and evening and weekend activities meeting up with like-minded volunteers from all over the world. There are regular social evenings all year round. If you have a three-day weekend (or longer) many interns fly to Rome or other European destinations. You can also spend time on the Continent before or after your project.
Malta is a part of the EU, so the currency is in Euros and you will not be able to spend more than 90-days in Malta, even if you combine travel to Italy or other European countries.
This program operates as a volunteer “health and wellness” project. Just let us know which type of medical or pharmacy project you want to do in Malta.
We will try to modify the program content to fit into any program requirements depending on the type of project you choose. Because training and experience are so diverse in the medical field, each project is uniquely set up for you based on your training or school needs.
If you prefer to do a medical or pharmacy international internship program in Malta, that program can be found here.
Learn or develop new medical skills in an atmosphere of learning before you embark on your professional career. Become a part of the professional community sooner rather than later and meet people globally in your chosen career path. Malta’s history as the “hospital of the Mediterranean” dates back to the Knights and the “Sacra Infermeria.” This tradition of quality health care continues through to the modern day with the level of service provided being equivalent to other European countries.
Health service in Malta includes specialized treatment like immunization, dental services, speech therapy, pharmacy and Pediatric clinics. Besides these specialized services, paramedic services like nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, and optometry are also offered by the health care units in Malta. Overall health development on Malta includes preventive medicinal checks in the form of immunization, baby clinics, glaucoma screening and weight check clinics.
The government of Malta offers free healthcare to all of its citizens. The biggest government expenditures are health and education.
